oh-ok - wow mini album 7" 1982

in 2002, oh-ok released a compilation of all their materials on collector's choice music. the remastered cd includes a couple of eps and some live stuff, some were produced by bruce baxter and mitch easter(let's active) and others. but most of the original recordings were released on georgia's db records, which was based in atlanta, active from 1979 to 1997. about two years ago "the complete reissue" came about on vinyl on an 18 track limited edition lp of 500 copies made. that being said both reissues are still available and can be bought thru several online music sites. the band comprised of linda hopper on vocals, cyndy stipe on back vocals, linda stipe on bass, david mccnair on drums and lastly, matthew sweet on guitars.

alaska - king of the class 7" 1999

out on marsh-marigold, a german independent label in hamburg, whom its list of exceptional artists consist of the ff: the legendary bang, poprace, red letter day, seashells, the acid house kings and many many more! 'king of the class'.. the band's debut single reminds me so much of the swedish indiepop scene. in fact, if i didn't know better, i thought they were the ahk. alaska also based in hamburg are torben schmieder, christoph martens and christine mauch, sweet boyish-like vocals with playful mod organs mixed sixties harmonies, it's a great recipe for indiepoppers!

how many beans make five - sweet torture 7" 1990

whew! .. finally have my "me time", after two weeks of packing me stuff and gettin' it hauled, that was every bit of a physical task and fatiguing to say the least! so i hate moving, ayt, who doesn't!?
so anyway, back to the music.. i thank everyone for hanging just a little bit longer, not that anyone actually reads what i write on this blog. i know i used to just scroll down really fast to the dl link and skip all the 411s when bloghopping, i do it all the time so i expect some of you guys to do the same.
limited release, sweet torture is h.m.b.m.f.'s only other single beside their 1988 split flexi with the popguns on "la-di- da" productions.
happy thanksgiving to all!

the voices - the sound of young america 2006

a three-piece indie psychedelic/shoegaze band from wales namely clare and christopher pompa and cs munday. had three wonderfully mastered studio albums in their short period of existence from 2005 to 2009, the first two on "my kung fu" recordings... a uk independent label situated in cardiff, ran by a single person with a taste for strange  and unusual music. kudos to people like him.
but most of all let us hope that the people of the philippines has seen the end of the most devastating typhoon ever to hit the face of the earth. i wish there was a way this blog can find something to help the people that were affected by this great misfortune. but with help from the usa and other caring countries all over the world and the united nations, i feel relieved already. god bless the people of the philippines!

systems of romance - dare the dance 12" 1983

here's something i picked up a few weeks back at a local record shop in l.a., yep it has been that long since i have visited a vinyl store.. let's just say that i've shifted my priorities to something else much more important in my life. truth is, i made it a habit to check out records every friday when i can but lately it had been compromised.
i am not really familiar with this outfit 'cept that it reminded me of a blog with the same name. system of romance is a los angeles new wave power synth group from the early eighties, led by singer-songwriters timm(vocals/bass) and justin(piano/keyboards) with ray drake on drums and john kasha on guitars. credits to stolen riff records and trax studios l.a., this record was produced by sor and mike mcdonald.

the avons - four songs 12" ep 1986

released in the mid-eighties the avons managed to put out another record thru john letharge of letharge records in 1986 with the help of producer howard turner who also produced "the chairs" and "14 iced bears". short-lived indiepop outfit hailing from england, the band is comprised of barry mcguilty(lead voice), mark kingston, aka baz, both from "the farmer's boys" circa 1984, hal jordan(vocals and guitar) with ed street(drums).

dandelion wine - daytime 7" 1992

besides the 1996 album called "model village" on garden of delights records, this is the only other release of the band that i know of. on this record the dandelion wine, a london based indie outfit were tim vass of the razorcuts(and you wonder why there was such a strong resemblance), and shirley souter. this record was released under brighton's indiepop label "marineville" which was active since the early nineties up to the present. other artist from the label's not-so-big of a library includes fat tulips, the anyways, the sugargliders and most current ones are the bb guns, dead coast, the fabergettes, etc.

the kensingtons - hope corner lane e.p. 1995

first from the kensingtons, a band from upminster essex, england, comprised of andrew, adam and frontman stewart jackman who is still active up to this day. his latest ep called "black tag parade" under dufflecoat records is quite an impressive compositions of power pop guitar tunes, aggressive yet melodic with laid back boyish don't-rush-me vocals. you can watch the video here.
release no. 11 from germany's very own meller welle produkte, an indenpendent label and home to some of the scarcest and hard-to-find new wave, indie, experimental, vocal and avantgarde outfits of the nineties. me was lucky enough to find this near mint copy for just a dollar at a local record shop yo. also enclosed was a list of singles available on meller welle including in heaven(oh i gotta have this one soon), the lovelies, pastel coloured days, southville and much more...
if anyone has any of these records, i'd like a copy in digital format pls.

v.a. - siete 7" 2006

while we're on the topic, and since the 'two for the price of one' compilation predominantly stepped up to the top of our very own "mustard" chart in only about three days i see the love for obscure indie is very prominent. with that being said, here's another seven inch compilation called siete from spain's indie label tragadiscos, this time contributions from sambassadeur singing "claudine" originally by the bats, math & physics club performing "angel gone" by beat happening, acid house kings doing loveninjas and vice versa. i must say.... the acid house kings did a really good job on "keep your love" and so does the loveninjas cover of "say yes if you love me", both sounds livelier than the orginal... hmmm... just sayin'.

really the only release i know from winter's mist label, this various seven (also released on swing set records) consists of experimental/indie/space rock tracks from madison electric, esme's symphony and the girl who stole the eiffel tower. pretty much underground independent bands that we've never heard of before. can't find any four-one-ones on the web at all, in fact when you search for madison electric.. you will get results like electric suppliers or something, or a blog name the girl who stole... blah blah blah!!

thousand yard stare - buttermouth cd5 1992

uk's thousand yard stare was an indie band hailing from slough in berkshire. active from the start of the nineties made a couple of full length albums and several no non-sense eps on their very own aardvark label, this is not your average mediocre band.. tys toured with the jennifers who soon became supergrass and supported tim booth's james and south london's carter usm before the britpop and baggy scene exploded. with both albums being produced by stephen street, you can almost assure that tys has great potentials. the "brightest hope for the future" as mentioned by nme zine had its final album released in 1993 challenged by what seemed to be the face of then blossoming "bab" scene with acts like pulp, blur, the charlatans, sleeper and suede just to name a few.
"buttermouth" from their debut album 'hands on'  ..a us only single that includes a remix version of buttermouth made exclusively by polygram for this five-track ep single or so it seems, hmmmm..(it could very well be the usa version of keepsake). either way, play it loud and enjoy!! uder randy??!!

king of culture - know how 7" 1984

new york outfit king of culture were originally mark dumais, rachel bowman and founders bill carey and lee warren. in 1983 mark and rachel left the band to pursue other interests and was replaced by jesse hultberg and lena karlstrom. bill and lee met at a college in florida, their previous band... non erotic male bonding, based in baltimore released a single in 1981 called "torture" which had gain success in many rock pool djs and was frequently played on bbc radio 1 thru dj john peel's discovery. despite the success of  nemb they left baltimore for new york and formed koc.
the release of this single had caused a stir locally on new york's lower east side where  "know how" were played on rock clubs and even appeared on juke boxes in bars and such.

monterey - the motorway 7" e.p. 1999

monterey are new yorkers jill, jon, jed, karen lev and ed, this ep contains short, pop, jangly tunes very reminiscent of the c86 movement, but a bit clean and what i mean by that is.. the songs are carefully arranged and orchestrated in such a way to give a bit of a modern sound. if any of you are familiar of the eighties indiepop scene then you would know what i'm talking about. with a boy/girl vocal compromise and pop melodic hymns, this shelflife music release on matinee recordings is definitely good enough to be in someone's record collection.

tripping daisy - piranha cd5 1995

here's another american band, an alternative rock quartet formed in 1990 hailed from texas..., dallas' very own tripping daisy. comprised of mark pirro, wes berggren, jeffrey bouck and frontman tim delaughter, were the original line up. "bill" the band's first full length album on indie label dragon street records received moderate airplay but a radio favorite in dallas(source, wikipedia.org) was described as neo-psychedelic rock due to heavy vocal fx and unconventional guitar riffs. jeff was replaced by bryan wakeland on drums following the release of there second album 'i am an elastic firecracker' in 1995, their first major label release. which bring us to this single, released under island records, unlike its predecessor, i got a girl... which peaked at number six on billboard mrt, "piranha" does not have that top forty sound that most mainstream ears are familiarized to. not hatin', just sayin'. in fact this song reminds me of the flaming lips' "she don't use jelly" back in 1993.

remedies - inanimate ep 2013

how often do you see or hear something this good for free, not since mequetrefe's "kill all indies" mp3 download was made available to everyone on bandcamp charitable. it's quite a contrary, this indie outfit from alabama delivers impressive dreampop harmonies and wistful lyrics. "we'll always hear the trains when we lay down our heads, watching you get lost" an excerpt from the 2nd track 'lost'. with influences like cocteau twins, wild nothing and julia holter just to name a few... there's no way you can't not make good music as such. "inanimate" the band's sophomore ep can be downloaded for free on bandcamp.com here. with much respect to the current swedish dreampop scene and artists like the embassy or the mary onettes.. these lads from birmingham truly exhibits the dream in dreampop.

blindside - idle eyes cd5 1993

second single from melbourne's very own indie/shoegaze band that was active from 1992-95. this oz quartet, not to be confused with the swedish post-hardcore group, was hamish cowan, chris smith, nick peeters and nick batterham (who was also in another independent band called "the earthmen"), released all three of their singles and an album on australian label summershine. here my friends was their sophomore release, it still sound awesome up to this day.. once in a while you go back to your old roots and you will find that some of the songs you've listen to over and over has been somehow a soundtrack of your life.

fourth single from now newly re-incarnated alternative uk outfit that was active in the early nineties(two albums and several singles), released under roughneck recording co., an indie label based in london, also a division of fire records that brought us early c86 talents such as close lobsters, spacemen 3, pulp just to name a few. midway still has just released a new album on bitter and twisted records called "the desert" earlier this year, hope to hear it soon. it just hasn't quite made it here in the usa yet.

sounds british, eh?? well this three-piece canadian outfit truly brings back good memories from the eighties. good melody, really catchy tune and the hair, the haaaiir!! lol , nevermind the video.. its a classic new wave anthem altogether. speaking of anthem.. the record was released on ontario based independent label "anthem records". hate that the twelve inch ep version of this song is not much different from the seven inch release, but i've read somewhere that there was a uk release of this single on a 12" format. well, that remains to be seen!

marketed exclusively by dr. dream records, inc. for bandwest production in 1988 right here in our own backyard "orange" cali. the band is talently comprised of kevin bartley on lead vocals and guitars with david rule on bass and damien murray on bangings. it's a six song ep all written by kevin but one, 'like dust' is a cover originally by passion puppets. the record itself is very nice, a crossover between sad lovers & giants and the armoury show. more nineties, this time is a remix of the twin peaks theme "falling" by david twins as remixed by d.j. herbie for disco magic(only the largest italo disco/dance/house record label in italia). i don't know how many times this song has been covered, but by far, this version of david lynch and angelo badalamenti's original score was the best for me. originally sang by julie cruise in 1990 for the ost... twin peaks theme had seen and heard all genres of cover versions, from the more recent trance version of minimalistix to the tears for fears mash-up redition by "the mob".

this 3-track promo single contains two songs not available on the official 12" 4-track ep. if you are a dj then you'd prefer this one only because it has the extended version of window pane on side a and nothing else as supposed to the four track ep which has two songs on both sides of the record.

from twenty-eleven we go back to the mid-eighties with this dark but catchy single from a new wave/postpunk band from boston. formed in 1980, this quintet were still in high school when they started. inspired by the punk and the developing new wave scene at that time, it's no surprise their music shows a little bit of aggressiveness mixed with harmonious synth melodies uncommon to most.

korova milk bar - do it again 12" 1989

one of the few singles the band had put out in their short career from 1989-92. just a couple of albums, one from bristol's subway org. and another on chapter 22, both active from the mid-eighties to the early nineties. it's a four song ep that's very reminiscent of the c86 movement.. jangly and youthful!
not like the lakers last slump, i am sorry i had to squeeze this in. just when you think you had a good run.. it could've been a 5-2 record on this grammy trip had they not gave that first game in phoenix away, but instead a slightly above average four of seven away-from-home stretch. i truly don't know how they can get into the playoff race with the way they're playing. may god bless my lakers, amen.

suicide romeo - suicide romeo 7" 1980

the only single i have heard from this interesting french new wave/disco band on france's very own celluloid records that was founded in 1979. a label you might be familiar of for releasing(and i'm going a bit mainstream here) time zone's world destruction, soft cell's tainted love et al. it's not really my cup of tea but i'm sure someone out  there will find this somewhat helpful, perhaps would bring some memories back or maybe had danced to this tune before! anyway i believe this was the quartet's only single.. a bit funky and on the disco side if you know what i mean.
