strawberry story - easy peazy lemon 7" 1990

strawberry story born in the late eighties, an indie band from the uk. fronted by a hayley beckman on vocals, rex stinson on guitar, james peterson on lead guitar and paul stinson on drums and bass was certainly unique in their own way. to those that know this uk outfit... like the ramones during their heyday, strawberry story delivers original indie symphonies with fuzzy guitars and child-like female vocal. whose comeback in 2007 with "sci-fi guy" on cloudberry records and  "summer scene ep"(anorak records)  in 2008 sadly saw the split of the band before the ep was released. here was their only material under daisychain records followed by releases from heaven records, then japanese owned london-based label vinyl japan and the usa's ever growing parasol.

afraid of stairs - not today 7" 2003

an exceptional shoegaze band from sweden... a duo of pontus wallgren and max sjöholm hailing from  the home of twee pop international, gothenburg, sweden. with only two releases under their belt, this one being their debut single from labrador records followed by a great ep from lavender recordings called "afraid of stairs" in 2006 re-creates an array of an early shoegaze melodies perfectly blended with today's nugaze atmospheric sound, so good it almost hurt.

would-be-goods - the camera loves me 7" 1988

what can i say... the lakers are on a four game winning streak and tomorrow they are in orlando to battle the magic. and did i mention that all four wins are road games beating the likes of celtics and the knicks of new york. go lakers!!
anyway here's something i just recently picked up together with the cd re-release of the same title from a local record store in hollywood. safe to say i hit the jackpot! 'el materials are very hard to find especially the old ones... the camera loves me is a long lost twee pop tune that i have not heard of before and if it wasn't for youtube i never would've known about them. this particular record is an spaniard promo 7", i have to admit after all these years it still sound as good and fresh as any swedish twee acts of today.

bangkutaman - IX singles and b sides

founded in the early nineties, these indonesian three-piece band met as college students in yogyakarta. with the love for the smiths, oasis and of course the stone roses as their music expresses it. back then the indie scene in yogyakarta failed to compare to the more popular "scene" in the bigger and more aspiring cities of
jakarta and bandung as bangkutaman was never heard of until mtv indonesia featured their video of kabut in 2003. you can read more from the band here @thejakartapost. not sure if they are still together but their music certainly will be,.at least for some fortunate indiepoppers like us.

random single of the month

this month's a' la carte is brought to you by independent project records highly regarded for its trademark letterpress packaging as for its music and is/was based in arizona. like its label mates... half spring, for against and scenic just to name a few, indian bingo showcases a variety of sounds. post punk, new wave and sometimes too sad but undoubtedly melodic. fronted by mike boul, scatalogical was the band's first project of only two. 1993 saw indian bingo's last release, a self titled cd ep from rockville records which i still yet to possess but don't want to spend an arm if i can help it.
just to make everything clear, rsotm are usually a non-album cut or if  an album cut was never a porky prime cut. in other words random single of the month are the shoulda coulda woulda and wortha of a "single" release by itself but never was.
